Gastric bypass surgery can lead to death during and after the operation
A large number of Americans are classified as obese. The lifestyle
diseases like heart disease and diabetes have been associated with
excess weight. Cancer has a relation to excess weight. In other words,
if you are overweight, you increase your chances of suffering from
cancer and diabetes. If you are genetically predisposed to any of
these diseases, you will have further increased the chances of
suffering from them by being overweight. Since excess weight has been
an epidemic in the United States for a long time, gastric bypass has
become an acceptable means to losing the excess weight. It is meant
to be the last option in the lack of other means to losing weight
since there have been incidence of gastric bypass surgery death
The idea behind gastric bypass surgery is to reduce the size of the
stomach so that less food is taken into the body. This way, no matter
how big the appetite of the person is, the person gets filled up
faster and can only eat a certain amount of food. Due to the less
food, there is less calorie intake than before the surgery; and
therefore, there is rapid weight loss later on. The advantages of the
surgery are many, and a lot of people have been able to benefit from
it. The persons who were morbidly obese change their lives completely
as they are now able to go through life more easily and have more
energy and more self esteem. The advantages attract many people to
the surgery and this increases the risks associated with having
surgery. Not all of the gastric bypass surgeries are successful; some
lead to gastric bypass surgery death
Gastric bypass surgery death occurs in one out of 350 gastric
bypass surgeries and it is set to increase as there are many people
opting for these surgeries each year. These rates are not inclusive of
those who die after the surgery has been done on them. One in every
50 of those who go through this procedure dies within a month of the
procedure. There are those patients who die due to the complications
of the surgery which require several other follow up surgeries. It has
been said that gastric bypass surgery death occurs in more than 12% of
the patients who go through this procedure after 15 years. A good
number of them develop complications like infections, ulcers
gallstones, and leaks in their systems. A good number of these
complications are caused by inexperienced and unqualified surgeons who
perform these procedures.
